Dreaming of dinosaurs

So I spent almost 2 hours looking at dinosaur fossils at AMNH on Saturday right…then yesterday I saw xkcd’s raptor fence comic (see below), so it’s no surprise that I dreamed of dinosaurs last night.

My dream went like this – I was a guy in the dream, by the way:

I was with two of my pals when we got lost at sea and arrived at a remote island in the middle of nowhere. Tired and afraid, we walked around the island, pushing aside tall grass as we went further into the forest. We were surrounded by trees with thick trunks and lush green leaves. As we went deeper into the forest, we lost track of time, and suddenly I realized that one of my friends was no longer with us. Terrified, two of us searched for him, not knowing how we got separated. The jungle was eerily quiet, so we crept around carefully, not daring to call out his name, afraid to attract unwanted attention.

Suddenly, we froze. There was a soft wet sound to our left, like the sound a dog makes when it drinks from a puddle. As we strained to listen, the sound became clearer, and it wasn’t a single sound…it actually sounded like a pack of dogs drinking from the same puddle. On top of that, we heard soft crunching sounds. Despite our fear, we crept towards the sounds. I know, crazy right?

As we got nearer, the sounds became much clearer – there were snorts and coos, almost like a bird’s, and also shuffling of feet among leaves. But the most awful of them all, was the sickly wet crunching sounds. And it smelled too, of rotten meat, garbage, with a hint of iron. Then suddenly, we saw them. They were several goat-sized, bluish scaled creatures, with narrow snouts and clawed limbs. Feeling oddly detached, I thought to myself, “Oh wow, those are velociraptors.” They were crowding around something, their heads bobbing, occasionally ducking down to the ground, then coming up again with bloody snouts. Numbly, I nudged my friend and pointed at a hollow tree trunk near the creatures. Slowly, keeping our heads low and barely breathing, we made our way as silently as we could towards the tree trunk. We then carefully crawled into it together – the tree trunk was surprisingly wide.

As we edged closer, we were horrified to see a piece of clothing at the other end of the tree trunk. It was torn and bloody, but even in strips I recognized my other friend’s t-shirt. I realized then what the raptors were doing. My friend also started breathing heavily, just as I felt my hands go cold and blood rushing up to my ears. Suppressing my gag reflex, I inched forward to get a closer look. Weird right? But then again dreams never make sense. Sure enough, I saw ragged chunks of meat on the ground, which I knew were leftovers of my friend’s body. I could see his torn left arm twitching on the ground as one of the raptors pulled strips of meat off of it. Despite feeling terribly scared, I couldn’t take my eyes off the scene. Numbly, I watched the raptors as they continued to chew on what’s left of my friend.

And then I woke up.

The dream fresh in my mind, I replayed it over and over again in my head so that I won’t forget the details. I love remembering my dreams, especially bizarre ones like this. Next, I would very much like to dream of Special Agent Pendergast, please.
